As with most automakers, Acura offers a vehicle that caters to family needs and more specific demands. The MDX boasts a spacious interior that can accommodate up to 7 passengers, and its maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds is sufficient for a small camper or boat. Best of all, the Japanese manufacturer's SUV remains enjoyable to drive. It's the perfect vehicle for those who hate making compromises.

For 2025, the Japanese SUV's exterior remains unchanged, but it benefits from a host of small improvements. A few aesthetic details have been refined, but the most significant updates lie in the realm of technology. The multimedia system has been completely revamped, and the audio system has been upgraded. Additionally, Acura has introduced a new Platinum Elite A-Spec version.

Lineup and Pricing

For 2025, the MDX lineup consists of four trims, starting with the Tech model, priced at $69,593. This entry-level trim offers a comprehensive list of standard features, attractive styling, and cutting-edge technology like the AcuraWatch system. Next is the A-Spec version at $72,593, which features a sportier look thanks to the removal of chrome accents from the exterior. The Platinum Elite A-Spec version shares a similar design but includes more luxurious features, justifying its $77,593 price tag. Finally, the Type S Ultra version remains the top-tier trim, with a starting price of $90,634—still a great deal considering its impressive performance.

Category and Competition

What I particularly like about the Acura MDX is that it's as spacious and capable as other luxury midsize SUVs while showcasing a significantly sportier and sleeker look. This distinctive styling, combined with its unique and proven powertrains, sets it apart from the competition.

Rivals: Audi Q7, Audi Q8, BMW X5, BMW X6, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT6, Genesis GV80, Infiniti QX60, JLR Discovery, Lexus GX, Lexus RX, Lincoln Aviator, Lincoln Nautilus, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Volvo XC90.

Design and Technology

Acura has always impressed me with its vehicle designs. In some cases, the brand is seen as an "upmarket Honda," but the MDX truly stands apart with a unique appearance. It's impossible to mistake it for a similar model from another brand, thanks to its distinctive design elements and signature styling. The MDX is both elegant and athletic, effortlessly turning heads wherever it goes.

The interior is arguably my favorite aspect of the Acura MDX, as it maintains a classic and characteristic Acura design. The dashboard features a cult-favorite layout, with well-thought-out ergonomics. The only element that slightly annoys me is the button system for selecting Drive, Reverse, or Park. While it's a signature Acura feature, it's not particularly intuitive.

Performance

The 2025 Acura MDX offers two powertrain options, starting with the classic 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 290 horsepower and 287 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive comes standard. This V6 is one of the last iterations in the Honda/Acura lineup and, in my opinion, one of the best engines ever created by the brand.

Opt for the Type S Ultra version, and you'll get a more spirited powertrain. This trim is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 engine with twin turbochargers, delivering a total output of 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. It's essentially the same engine found in the NSX, minus the hybrid technology. Once again, all-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic transmission are standard.

Weak Points

  • Lack of bold colors in the MDX palette.
  • No hybrid versions available.

Strong Points

  • Excellent value for money and outstanding reliability.
  • Fun to drive, with impressive performance in the Type S Ultra trim.

Signature Feature

The Acura MDX stands out from its competitors with its unique design and exceptional build quality.

Final Thoughts

Over the years, Acura has built a solid reputation, becoming one of the most respected automakers in the industry. While its lineup isn't as extensive or varied as some competitors, this isn't a drawback when the brand offers well-calibrated and competitive products.
